Cuts that need stitches, wound dressings, abscesses that need draining, ingrown toenails, ear syringing and the removal of small skin lesions are all done in the clinic treatment room under local anaesthetic where needed. Follow-up is part of it: dressing changes, stitch removal and a check that the wound has healed are all included rather than being separate appointments to chase. Anything that needs an operating theatre or a specialist is referred rather than attempted here.

Common questions
- How soon should a cut be stitched?
- Ideally within a few hours, and the sooner the better. Come the same day rather than waiting to see whether it closes on its own.
- Will it leave a scar?
- Any wound deep enough to need stitches leaves some mark. Careful closure and keeping it clean give it the best chance, but nobody can promise no scar.
- Do I need a tetanus injection?
- It depends on the wound and when you were last vaccinated. Your record is checked at the same visit and the injection given there if it is due.
